How To Clean A Glass Crack Pipe

Many of us wouldn't think twice about cleaning our glasses with whatever's close to hand. Surely a quick wipe with the corner of your t-shirt, your jumper or a tissue isn't so bad? Wrong. Frequently cleaning your glasses this way leads to damaged lenses, and it's really not worth the risk, especially when you've paid a lot for your specs.

'Often people use a tissue or their sleeve to clean their glasses but this is certainly not a good solution as both can leave dust or dirt on the lens. It can also cause fine scratches to occur on the lens surface which can impair the lenses over time,' says Farah Gatrad, Clinical and Regulatory Officer at the Association of Optometrists.

The right way to do it
Clean your glasses every day and make sure your hands are clean before you start, advises Dr Nigel Best, clinical spokesperson for Specsavers. He suggests you either use soft microfibre lens wipes or an alcohol-free liquid lens cleaner. And then dry the lenses with a gentle microfibre cloth.

'Gently rub both sides of the lenses and all parts of the frame for a few seconds,' says Dr Best. 'Make sure you clean every part, including the nose pads and the ends of the temples that rest behind your ears where debris can accumulate.'

What not to do
Never use hot water, because it can damage your lens coating. The same is true when it comes to using jumpers and clothing to clean your glasses. The abrasive particles create tiny scratches and small amounts of damage. If you clean your glasses this way too often, the surface of the lens will become cloudy and affect your vision. And don't resist cleaning them at all, this can also compromise your sight by creating a film on your lenses.

It's as simple as that, treat your glasses with care and you'll prolong their longevity and be seeing clearly for much longer! The best tip is to simply always have a microfibre cloth close to hand.
